For high-school students

If the world never ceases to interest you, and are interested not only in new knowledge, but also in how it is created – you are in the right place! Medical University of Gdańsk is the only medical university in Poland with the research university status, and our lecturers will be happy to share their knowledge with you.

We would like to invite high school students to participate in our “Science is People” educational program. Its participants will meet with male and female researchers, not only to gain knowledge in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology and health sciences, but also to learn about the scientific research to which we owe it.

The program includes 5 meetings that will be held once a month (Saturday-Sunday) at the Medical University of Gdansk. The first meeting for the group accepted for the winter term 2022/2023 will be held in the second half of October this year, the first meeting for the group accepted for the summer term will be held in February 2023.

Participants from outside the Pomeranian Voivodeship are provided with accommodation for the duration of the classes.

What have we prepared?

You will find out how dynamically medicine has developed over the past few decades. We will take you on a “journey to the past” – to the Medical University of Gdansk Museum, where you will see unique exhibits, including an X-ray machine from 1940, a cystoscope from the mid-20th century, a glass syringe, and hear the history of surgical gloves and stethoscope.

You will be invited to attend workshops in the anatomy labs. This will provide an opportunity for advanced revision of neuroanatomy and working with classic cadavers. You will check out the possibilities of an interactive anatomy table used in classes with students.

We will introduce you to the secrets of surgery. You will learn about the latest tools and developments in this branch of medicine, including the growing use of artificial intelligence and the challenges it presents. During the practical classes, you will learn basic surgical techniques and instruments, and try to place surgical sutures. Neoplastic diseases are a major challenge for global health policy. We will show you how many people with different expertise are part of an interdisciplinary team working to uncover the biology of cancer and create new diagnostic tools for patients.

With the development of civilization, there has also been a significant increase in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease. At meetings with cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, you will learn, e.g. about the process of organizing non-commercial clinical trials aimed at optimizing treatment for patients suffering from myocardial infarction, and what you could learn from studying the microcirculation. You will see what 3D model and simulation labs look like and what they are used for, as well as how the heart transplant process is organised.

You will find out about the importance of proper sleep hygiene and habits in this field, as well as the importance that sleep disorders can have in terms of cardiovascular diseases. You will also learn about the diagnostic capabilities of the Sleep Laboratory, which allows specialists to perform detailed analysis of a patient’s sleep and advanced diagnostics. You will learn what relationships exist between wildlife biodiversity and zoonotic diseases, and how challenging it is (not just for scientists) to manage ecosystems consciously and sensibly. You will learn about research on diseases carried by rodents living in forests and urban green spaces and how to prevent zoonotic pathogens.

And much, much more!
