The Essentials of a Young Researcher

The IDUB Program Office has prepared an offer for students interested in research careers and doctoral students. The course, prepared in cooperation with the Student Scientific Society, is designed to develop the competencies needed to function in the modern world of science.

The Excellence Initiative – Research University program allows us to develop new forms of support for young researchers. In 2021, the university’s Young Science Maker grant competition was created with them in mind. In the two editions to date, nearly 4.5 million PLN were awarded to 96 scientists to carry out research.

We know that gaining skills in professional research project planning and implementation, managing a project team or learning the principles of academic writing is not possible during the standard curriculum. That is why our next initiative aimed at budding researchers – students and doctoral students – is the Essentials of a Young Researcher course, a series of workshops for people who are taking their first steps in scientific activity. The program, prepared by the IDUB Program Office in cooperation with the Student Scientific Society, is designed to provide participants with the competencies needed to function in the modern world of science.

Our goal is to develop and professionalize research competence among students and doctoral students with the highest potential. Our experienced scientists and invited experts from outside the university will help them develop a package of skills that seem essential from the perspective of early entry and successful functioning in the national and international scientific fields. I believe that the proposed support will directly translate into, among other things, an increase in their ability to apply for research funds and their ability to write scientific publications that match the level of recognized journals..

Prof. Tomasz Bączek, Rector’s Representative for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Program

The “Essentials of a Young Researcher” workshop is aimed at the needs of students and doctoral students taking their first steps on the path of scientific development. Talking to the experienced, active scientists involved in this project will provide a large dose of inspiration. I am pleased that such a valuable form of support has been created for students starting out, including many members of the Student Scientific Society. I am convinced that it will soon bear fruit in the form of new innovative research projects.

Maria Renke, president of the Student Scientific Society

‘How to science’ initiative is great opportunity for MUG students to get an insight on how to start their journey in research and what it offers. As medical students it is crucial for us to be up to date with the new advancements in medicine and knowing the importance of evidence based medicine. Before even trying to answer difficult questions in scientific research, it salient to know how to form an opinion first regarding any piece of information based on your judgement and with the help of analyzing tools provided. With this course, students will be exposed to such brain exercises and introduced to methodology of scientific research work from the basics like how to read a scientific paper to applying for financing research projects..
