Actionable Understanding for Better Value in Heart and Vascular Medicine

ABOUT

Optimizing outcomes for patients with heart and vascular disease depends upon continued clinical evidence-based and coordinated research. Although a more systematic understanding of the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of cardiovascular diseases exists, still many challenges remain for clinicians, researchers, seeking to continue scientific and clinical advancements in the field. Most importantly, more robust data are needed on how well clinical trials are translated into contemporary practice.

#CleverHeart (#CLinical EVidencE-based Research in HEART and vascular medicine) Network seeks to build upon experience and success achieved to-date to create a new research structure and quality aiming at actionable understanding for better value in heart and vascular medicine. We aim at working around the clock to determine innovative solutions to the heart disease epidemic.

INITIAL EFFORTS

1. standardized, shared common data elements across the network: reduce redundant data capture, maintenance, analysis

2. standardized, shared regulatory/contracting practices: support data sharing, streamline start up

3. collaborative research: demonstrating integrated data can support novel science otherwise not possible

4. shared QI expertise: To promote translation of discovery to improvements in care

5. scalability: tools to support expansion to other networks and emerging data sources

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Clinical/Interventional Cathlab CoreLaboratory (Medical University of Gdansk/Medical University of Warsaw)
  • Data CoreLaboratory (Medical University of Warsaw/Medical University of Gdansk) – facilitating data sharing, integration, and management
  • Improvement Core (Medical University of Warsaw) – supporting collaborative learning and quality improvement activities across the networks

MISSION – Research & Development

#CleverHeartNetwork – Actionable Understanding for Better Value in Heart and Vascular Medicine

A quick glance at U.S. statistics on the subject paints a bleak picture: One American dies of cardiovascular disease (CVD) every 38 seconds, which costs the healthcare system more than $329 billion a year. The aim for researchers is to maximize return on investment and sustainability for organizations funding and participating in research and quality improvement work.

Our ambition is to foster novel science and accelerate translation of discovery to improvements in the field of cardiovascular care. Through radical innovation, we would like to become better at treating patients with cardiovascular disease individually (“personalized medicine”). The network works strategically and systematically to increase collaboration between basic research, clinical research, health services research and clinics. In this way, we want to create greater knowledge as well as improved quality and efficiency of the individual patient care through a translational strategy.

Last but not least we plan to accelerate improvements in health outcomes for patients with heart and vascular disease by:

1. uniting and aligning scientists, organizations, and stakeholders across the field to advance research and improvement efforts through collaboration

2. translating new scientific discoveries into better care at the bedside, in the clinic, and in communities

3. developing a flexible infrastructure to support these activities that is scalable to expand to new partners and emerging data source
