On June 1-3, representatives of the International Advisory Council: Prof. Dame Anna Dominiczak, Ambassador of MUG (Regius Professor of Medicine, University of Glasgow), Prof. Andrea Gallamini (A. Lacassagne Cancer Center, Nice) and Prof. Giuseppe Mancia (Professor Emeritus, University Milano-Bicocca) met with university authorities, leaders of Priority Research Areas and selected researchers to review the progress of the implementation of the “Excellence Initiative-Research University” program and further development plans. During the visit, the university was represented by Rector Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Vice-Rector for Development and Education and Acting Chancellor Prof. Jacek Bigda, Vice-Rector for Science Prof. Michał Markuszewski, the Rector’s Representative for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University”, Prof. Tomasz Bączek, the leaders of the Priority Research Areas: those heading the Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy, Prof. Jacek Jassem, who heads the Department of Hypertension and Diabetology, Prof. Krzysztof Narkiewicz, who heads the Department of Biochemistry, Prof. Ryszard Tomasz Smoleński. The session was also attended by the head of the Department of Haematology & Transplantology, Prof. Jan Maciej Zaucha, from the Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy: Prof. Rafal Dziadziuszko and Bartłomiej Tomasik, Ph.D. from the Division of Embryology: Prof. Michał Pikuła, from the Department of Biochemistry: Dr. Habil. Barbara Kutryb-Zając, coordinator of the Bioanalytical Laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry: Paweł Olszewski, Acting Head of the Program Support Department For “Excellence Initiative – Research University”: Olga Hofman and Marta Popęda from the Department of Pathomorphology.
Foreign guests learned the details of intra-university grant competitions and had the opportunity to talk to their winners. The initiator of the visit, Prof. Tomasz Bączek presented the activities of structures supporting researchers in detail. He comprehensively discussed various aspects of the Excellence Initiative – Research University project he led, highlighting its effectiveness and impact on the University’s development. As a part of the session, participants visited selected scientific and clinical units (including the Center of Translational Medicine, the Early Phase Clinical Research Centre, and the Bioanalytical Laboratory).
The International Advisory Council includes recognized experts from foreign medical universities and industry entities. The purpose of the Board is to provide an unbiased evaluation of the activities of the University carried out within the framework of the Excellence Initiative – Research University Program, and to identify best global practices that will allow systematic reinforcement of MUG’s position in key areas.
