Young athletes research laboratory at the Department of Pediatrics, Hematology and Oncology of MUG/ UCC
Task
The task of the established unit will be the comprehensive care of children and young people training in various sports within the sports sections of AZS AWFiS in Gdansk.
Goals:
1. Improving the health of children under heavy physical strain during sports training in various sports.
2. Improving the sports performance achieved through extensive medical care.
3. Introducing preventive supplementation.
The laboratory, which provides care for children and adolescents subjected to regular intensive physical exertion in various sports in the Pomeranian region, is a unique unit on a national and European scale. Conducting wide-ranging research in cooperation with national centers, as well as those in Western Europe and the US, will help develop a special proprietary program to support sports training centers by the Research University in nutrition, supplementation and physiotherapy for a group of children who are under the care of specialist clinics and training in various sports.
1. Non-invasive monitoring in the early detection of thyroid disease and pre-diabetes and diabetes.
2. Design and organization of screening and local and nationwide epidemiological studies (including representative samples) to assess the prevalence and management of pre-diabetes and diabetes.
3. Evaluating the effect of intensive sports training on selected parameters of the immune system in young athletes.
4. Evaluating the effect of intensive and systematic long-distance training on the overall health of children and adolescents up to 18 years of age.
1. Full-scope specialist medical care for a group of children and adolescents involved in various sports.
2. Design and organization of diabetes and obesity prevention programs in a group of children and adolescents training in sports.
3. Design and organization of local and nationwide epidemiological studies (including representative samples) for assessing the prevalence and management of diabetes.
4. Cooperation with health care institutions, other scientific and research institutions and local government units associated with the foregoing scope.
5. Design and implementation of large population-based studies using the Department’s infrastructure.
6. Planning a nationwide epidemiological study (protocol, selection of research tools).
The Research Director is responsible for planning and supervising research projects, and is supported by a team consisting of students and laboratory and clinical staff, the shape of which is adapted to current project needs.
