ABOUT US

A Laboratory for Preclinical Testing of Medical Devices and Cosmetic Products has been established at the Department of Medical Chemistry of the Medical University of Gdańsk. Preclinical studies are a fundamental stage in the development process of new therapies, medications or preparations playing a key role in assessing the efficacy and safety of the studied substances, before they enter the next phases of clinical trials. The long-standing practice and experience of the unit’s scientific staff in in silico and in vitro testing allows for efficient evaluation of the cytotoxic properties and molecular mechanisms of studied substances, medical devices and cosmetic formulations, based on both standard and innovative research protocols.

The unit has laboratories and equipment to conduct research on material isolated from humans and animals, including primary cells. We have two cell laboratories, including one with higher standards, prepared for the cultivation of genetically modified organisms.

SCOPE OF TESTING

  • Cytotoxicity analyses based on MTT, XTS, XTT, WST-1 protocols, among others
  • Cytometric analyses, including determination of intracellularly generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species levels, as well as type of cell death
  • Western Blot analysis
  • Analysis of the cellular antimigratory effect based on real-time microscopy
  • Computational analyses, including molecular modeling, determination of ligand-protein interaction site and strength, molecular dynamics simulations
  • Research on oxidative stress and the effects of antioxidants on cells
  • Preparation of biological specimens for further testing
