On 4 December 2025, theDepartment of Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery and General Surgery at the Medical University of Gdańsk hosted a visit by Prof. Vitaliy Vladimirovich Makarov, a specialist in general, trauma, and emergency surgery from Kharkiv State Medical University in Ukraine. Prof. Makarov is a member of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Ukrainian surgical societies. He regularly publishes scientific papers on trauma surgery, with research interests including, among others, the treatment of gunshot wounds and the application of minimally invasive techniques.
During the visit, the professor delivered a lecture entitled Non-standard approaches to gunshot wounds to the neck and chest, the use of magnetic instruments for treating wounds, focusing on unconventional methods for treating gunshot injuries to the neck and chest, as well as the use of magnetic instruments in the therapy of such traumas.
The event was divided into two parts. In the lecture segment, the speaker presented real-life descriptions of clinical cases of patients treated in Kharkiv, showcasing modern approaches to managing gunshot wounds to the neck and chest. He also shared practical experiences from daily clinical work amid ongoing armed conflict. Examples of the application of magnetic instruments in removing foreign bodies and treating wounds were discussed.
The second, practical part of the meeting allowed participants to test the magnetic tools brought by Prof. Makarov, including a special magnetic ‘wand’ for extracting bullets from gunshot wounds. This segment aroused particular interest and served as a starting point for discussions on the potential use of such tools in other areas of medicine.
The visit provided a valuable source of clinical knowledge and an opportunity for exchanging experiences in trauma, emergency, and battlefield surgery, as well as for strengthening international academic contacts.
