The international RedMeg Regenerative Medicine of the Future conference is now behind us. The event, which took place on September 23, was initiated by Prof. Michał Pikuła from the Department of Embryology at the Medical University of Gdańsk and Prof. Ryszard Smoleński, head of the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical University of Gdańsk, with the support of the Initiative of Excellence – Research University program. The event was held under the honorary patronage of the Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk and the Daniel Fahrenheit Association of Universities in Gdańsk. The conference took place in the Prof. Z. Kieturakis Auditorium at the UCK Center for Invasive Medicine. The speakers at the conference were lecturers from three Gdańsk universities: GUMed, UG, and PG. The event was also an opportunity to meet the Research Team Technological developments for bioanalysis and therapy including cell-based, 3D, and artificial engineered models (POB 3, Team IX, Research University).
The conference presented the latest achievements in stem cell research, tissue regeneration mechanisms and innovative materials with pro-regenerative properties.
The conference was opened by Prof. M. Pikuła, who, together with Prof. R. Smoleński, welcomed the participants and lecturers. Prof. M. Pikuła emphasised the enormous importance of regenerative medicine, especially considering the ageing population and the ever-increasing number of patients suffering from lifestyle diseases.
Prof. M. Pikuła then gave a lecture titled Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AD-MSCs) as a versatile tool in regenerative medicine and drug screening models.
Next, Prof. Susanna Miettinen (Tampere University) gave a presentation on Vascularised and Innervated In Vitro Models Utilising Adipose Stem Cells. The last presentation before the break, titled Epigenetic engineering of regeneration, was given by Prof. Paweł Sachadyn from Gdańsk University of Technology.
The second panel began with a talk on Healing Waves from Gdańsk: Peptides in Regenerative Medicine, delivered by Prof. Sylwia Rodziewicz-Motowidło from the University of Gdańsk. This was followed by a lecture by Dr Katarzyna Gurzawska-Comis (Aarhus University, University of Liverpool) titled GreenNanoBone – Advanced Approaches in Bone Regeneration. This part of the conference concluded with Prof. Ken Suzuki’s (Queen Mary University of London) presentation Mesenchymal stem cell therapy for myocardial repair.
The third part of the conference began with a lecture entitled Multifaceted role of miR181 in pluripotent stem cell differentiation, delivered by Prof. Maria Anna Ciemerych-Litwinienko from the University of Warsaw. The next lecture, MicroRNA-Driven Communication Between Myoblasts and Endothelial Cells in Muscle Repair, was given by Prof. Edyta Brzóska-Wójtowicz from the University of Warsaw. The last panel of the conference concluded with a presentation on Immune Modulation and Lipid Synthesis: Dual Actions of a Fluorinated Oxysterol in Neurorepair, from Dr. Habil. Aleksandra Rutkowska, from the MUG.
A poster session was also held during the conference, and after the last lecture, the results of the competition for the best posters were announced (a total of six participants were awarded). Finally, there was time for discussion on the issues presented. The conference was officially closed by Prof. M. Pikuła, who thanked all the lecturers, participants and the entire organising committee for their support and assistance in making this event possible.
A book of abstracts was also produced as as result of the conference, and will be officially published by the MUG.
