International cooperation of MUG scientists

The Medical University of Gdańsk hosted researchers from the University of Oslo on August 28-29, 2024. The team represented by Professor Michael Bretthauer, Madeleine Skotnes and Madeleine Berli participated in the meetings initiating the Horizon Europe ECOPOP Early COlorectal cancer: Patient-targeted and Organ Preserving treatment project, which will be implemented in the Department of Oncologic, Transplant and General Surgery.

A separate meeting, with the participation of MUG authorities, was dedicated to exploring opportunities for didactic cooperation in student education with regard to Evidence Based Medicine. Participants in the discussion included Prof. Michał Żmijewski, Vice-rector for science; Prof. Anna Żaczek, Vice-rector for science for development and cooperation, and Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki, associate dean of the Faculty of Medicine, as well as *Olga Hofman, Head of the Head of the Administration Department for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Program.

The ECOPOP project involves record funding for the Medical University of Gdańsk from the Horizon Europe fund, and will be carried out in a consortium with the University of Oslo, the National Cancer Institute-State Research Institute, and over a dozen other foreign facilities. The project will involve three clinical trials comparing the efficacy and safety of endoscopic interventions versus surgical treatment in early colorectal cancer.

The research team includes experts from the Department of Oncologic, Transplant and General Surgery at MUG: Prof. Jarosław Kobiela, Head of the unit; Dr. Habil. Michał Kamiński, Assoc. Prof., Nastasia Pilonis, Ph.D., Piotr Spychalski, Ph.D. as well as Prof. Michael Bretthauer of the University of Oslo.
