On vitamin D with Prof. Słomiński – executive summary

Professor Andrzej Slominski from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, USA visited the Medical University of Gdańsk on 20 May. During the visit, the expert gave a guest lecture entitled Vitamin D in the skin: Something new under the sun. The event was held in a hybrid format: online and at the CBM.

The meeting was officially opened by Prof. Michał Żmijewski, Head of the Department of Histology and Coordinator of Research Team 4 Imaging of cell pattern and cellular processes from PRA 3, who introduced the expert to the lecture participants. In the course of the lecture, Prof. Słomiński talked about the vitamin D3 metabolites lumisterol and tachysterol in the skin, adrenal glands, and serum, which exhibit biological activity as hormones in vitro and in vivo. The effects of the new vitamin D derivatives tachysterol and lumisterol are determined by their local and systemic production, modulated by interactions with specific nuclear receptors and their downstream metabolism.
