Visit of Professor José Luis Capelo Martinez at the MUG

The Division of Medical Microbiology of the MUG hosted a visit from 7-10 February this year by Professor José Luis Capelo Martinez of NOVA University in Lisbon. The meeting was the result of scientific cooperation between the professor’s team and the creators of a new diagnostic method for urinary tract infections, who are researchers from the Medical University of Gdańsk: Dr. Habil. Tomasz Jarzembowski, Prof. Ewa Bryl, Agnieszka Daca, Ph.D., Dr. Habil. Lidia Piechowicz, Assoc. Prof., Katarzyna Wiśniewska, Ph.D. and Prof. Jacek Witkowski. The cooperation undertaken is aimed at further developing innovative diagnostic methods for urinary tract diseases.
During his stay at the Medical University of Gdańsk, Prof. Capelo Martinez visited the laboratories and workshops of the units with which he will collaborate – the Division of Medical Microbiology, the Department of Physiopathology, and the Department of Experimental Rheumatology. In addition, he gave a Prescriptomics lecture, during which he outlined the main applications of urinary proteomic analysis in the diagnosis of bladder cancer. After the lecture, meeting participants had the opportunity to ask questions. The event ended with a lively discussion.
Professor José Luis Capelo Martinez is very committed to helping war refugees from Ukraine, so during his stay in Gdańsk, together with Professor Lidia Piechowicz and Dr. Habil. Tomasz Jarzembowski from the Division of Medical Microbiology, they visited the Stork’s Nest Foundation in Runów, where children from the Zaporizhzhia Children’s Home are staying.
Prof. José Luis Capelo Martinez obtained his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Vigo, UVIGO (Spain, 2002 Best Dissertation Award), and his Post-Doc at the Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa (Portugal). His academic career includes assistant and lecturer at UVIGO, a researcher at the Faculty of Chemistry of the New University of Lisbon, CD-FCT-UNL, a researcher at CD-UVIGO, and an assistant professor at CD-FCT-UNL. He is currently an associate professor at CD-FCT-UNL. Prof Capelo is co-director of the bioscope group. He has chaired 40 international conferences and is currently involved in directing 7. He was a member of Talant’s advisory board from 2006 to 2014 and has been editor-in-chief of the online Journal JIOMICS since its inception in 2011. His current research interests are in the development of new methodological approaches in personalised medicine using novel proteomics approaches, as well as the discovery of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a fellow of the American Chemical Society, and a member of the Portuguese Society of Chemistry. He has a Hirsch index of 37 and a citation count of around 6,000 and is ranked among the top 2% of researchers in the world by Stanford University.
