31.08.2022

Professor David R. Goodlett from the University of Victoria in Canada gave an open lecture at the Medical University of Gdańsk on August 31 entitled Integrating Research on Lipid A as a Therapeutic and Diagnostic into a National Fee-for-Service Centre. The Expert was invited to lecture by Prof. Ryszard T. Smoleński, Leader of PRA 3 and the Administration Department for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University Program”. The event, under the patronage of Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk and the institutional patronage of the Medical University of Gdańsk, was held in the hybrid form: in the Auditorium Primum named after Prof. Olgierd Narkiewicz in the AGN building and online.

Prof. Goodlett is a specialist in the field of mass spectrometry, during his career he has been active in various scientific areas, including medicine, oceanography, pharmacy, microbiology, proteomics, lipidomics and in research on the protein & glycolipid structure-function relationships, publishing a total of about 280 articles with Hirsch index 85. He is currently professor of biochemistry and microbiology at the University of Victoria in Canada (since 2020), where he is also the Director of the Proteomics Center and holds the Don and Eleanor Rix BC Leadership Chair in Biomedical and Environmental Proteomics. He was also a professor at the University of Meryland in Baltimore (2013-2020) and the University of Washington (2004-2012) and the first Director of Proteomics at the Institute for Systems Biology (2000-2003). In the years 2012-2016 he was a Finland Distinguished Professor. Prof. Goodlett is an Editor at “Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry”, and since 2007 also co-organizer of www.msbm.org. In 2018, he joined the International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science (ICCVS) as a Visiting Professor.

During the lecture, Prof. Goodlett presented the results of his research on lipid A as a therapeutic and diagnostic agent in bacterial infections of the body. Professor also introduced methods such as nanoPOTS (Nanodroplet Processing in One pot for Trace Samples) or those based on identifying bacterial infections of patients through the use of mass spectrometry. In the future, these novel techniques may serve as faster and more precise diagnostic tools. The meeting concluded with the traditional discussion.
