The meeting of Young Leaders of Science, attended by researchers from the Medical University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology and University of Gdańsk, was held in Sopot on June 13. The purpose of the event was to seek new levels of cooperation within Fahrenheit University.

MUG was represented by representatives of several scientific disciplines and all Priority Research Areas: Dr. Habil. Maciej Grzybek, Professor of the MUG (Division of Tropical Parasitology, Laboratory for Parasitological, Environmental and Tropical Studies), Dr. Habil. Barbara Kutryb-Zając (Department of Biochemistry), Dr. Habil. Marcin Skrzypski (Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy), Natasza Gilis-Malinowska, Ph.D. (1st Department of Cardiology, Centre of Translational Medicine) and Anna Supernat, Ph.D. (Division of Translational Oncology, Centre of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Analysis). Four scientists from the Gdańsk University of Technology took part in the meeting: Dr. Habil. Eng. Jacek Ryl (Institute of Nanotechnology and Materials Engineering), Małgorzata Szopińska, Ph.D. Eng. The audience was introduced to the topic of interdisciplinary cooperation by Prof. Krzysztof Narkiewicz of the Department of Hypertension & Diabetology and Prof. Michał Pikuła of the Division of Embryology. The participants then presented their research interests, past experience in scientific projects and identified areas of potential collaboration with other research groups. It quickly became apparent that many problems arise at the intersection of medicine and social sciences or medicine and technical sciences, requiring the involvement of interdisciplinary teams. Their identification and development is one of the goals of the “Excellence Initiative Program – Research University”.

The young scientists also took part in a discussion moderated by Prof. Tomasz Bączek, Rector’s Representative for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Program, during which they considered how Tri-City universities should develop to optimally support employees in their scientific activities. The ideas they submitted will be successively implemented in subsequent initiatives, creating an environment conducive to research activities.

The involvement of the participants, the sharing of knowledge, the constructive discussion – first of all, were very pleasing, and secondly, proved how valuable face-to-face meetings are. Not only do they provide scientists with the opportunity to identify completely new areas and find inspiration for their next projects, but they also integrate and stimulate the creative exchange of ideas around universal problems in the world of science – said Prof. Tomasz BączekSynergy should be the overriding goal within the FarU. Our collective potential is our people, 4,000 research and teaching staff and more than 1,700 doctoral students. It is hard to imagine how many connecting areas of research remain to be explored. We need to set our sights on their identification and development, so we are already starting to think about more similar events – added Profesor.

The meeting of Young Science Leaders of the three Gdańsk universities was organized as a part of the work of the Team for Identifying Areas of Synergy in Fahrenheit University Research.
